Ozone Therapy for the treatment of Chronic and Refractory Pain

What is Ozone Therapy?

For the application of Ozone Therapy in our clinic, we are referring the to the administration of Medical Grade Oxygen (O2) and Ozone (O3) in the form of an injection. The mixture is gaseous and generated on demand just before administration takes place. The Medical Grade Oxygen is pumped into an Ozone Generator which adds a controlled charge to the molecules allowing them to loosen the bond for milliseconds and rebind as Ozone. The machine allows for the Practitioner to adjust the concentration of the O2/O3 mixture based on the needs of the patient.

How does Ozone Therapy work?

Once the gaseous mixture is administered into the person’s body it instantaneously starts to interact with the cellular building blocks of amino acids and lipids.  The reaction forms different types of peroxide reactions called Ozonides.  Think of how Hydrogen Peroxide works to cleanse a wound.  These newly created bonds create a reverse stress on the body causing healing reactions to begin.

Ozone also has several naturally occurring properties that make it ideal for treatment of many medical problems.  These include:

  • Ozone upregulates (increases) healing receptors on injured cells
  • Ozone draws growth factors (healing structures) to injured cells
  • Ozone downregulates (decreases) overactive pain receptors at nerve endings in chronic pain areas
  • Ozone stimulates new blood vessel growth.  This allows more nutrients and oxygen to get to injured areas causing further healing.
  • Ozone tightens lax (loose) tendons/ligaments returning connective tissue to a healthier state
  • It is naturally germicidal.  It kills all organisms causing infection including bacteria, viruses, and fungus.

What can it treat?

Ozone Therapy at our clinic can be used to treat Chronic Pain in muscles, joints and connective tissue.  It can also be used areas with Refractory (unmanageable or resistant) Pain

Some patients have chosen to receive Ozone Therapy as a primary treatment of the chronic problem instead of other injection therapies offered at our clinic.

Other patients have chosen to have Ozone Therapy after having one or more areas that are still persisting after going through a treatment plan of Trigger Point or Joint Injections.

Still others have done Ozone Therapy to enhance their healing after receiving Allograft Cellular Therapy (Stem Cell treatment) at our clinic.

How many treatments will I need?

Patient response determines how many injections will be needed to treat any particular problem.  Some patients feel better after just one injection.  In most cases, however, 4 to 5 treatments are recommended.  There is no harmful effects for doing more than 5 either.

I’ve tried Trigger Point Injections or Therapeutic Joint Injections and they were not effective.  How will this be different?

Trigger Point Injections and Joint Injections are different ways to physically alter the internal environment of the tissue in the area that it is administered.  Even though these treatments are also highly effected, they sometimes cannot address prior tissue damage or death.

Ozone Therapy can both physically and chemically change the internal environment of the cell.  These therapies effectively combine the benefits of Therapeutic Injections (injections that relieve pain) and Regenerative Medicine (treatments that cause healing of dying or damaged tissue and reverse the degenerative process).

Does my insurance cover this service?

Since Ozone Therapy is a Regenerative Medicine service it is currently not a covered service under Medical Health Insurance.

How much does it cost for a treatment with Ozone Therapy

The price for a treatment with Ozone Therapy is $50 per area treated.

For example:

  • Treating the lower back muscles would be 1 treatment area
  • Treating a joint would be 1 treatment area.
  • Treating the neck and shoulder muscles would be 1 area, but treating the neck muscles and shoulder joint would be 2 areas.

What do I need to do if I am interested in Ozone Therapy?

If you are interested in Ozone Therapy you will need to meet with John Milburn II, APRN, CNP (our Nurse Practitioner) to determine the appropriate treatment plan for your condition. In most cases patients can consult with him and receive their first treatment on the same day.
